Detail, crystal clear installation
I am honored to be among the 25 Grantees awarded 2012 Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (LMCC) Manhattan Community Arts Fund (MCAF) Grants for Visual Art.
“crystal clear” focuses on the symbol that accompanies emergency workers, showing it as the fragile protection that keeps them safe and announces their good intentions.
What we see, however, is a broken icon and it is not familiar. We are asked to consider this symbol in the light of our linked humanity increasingly expressed around the globe through social networking.
Through the engagement of the public in the creation of this work, the installation gives voice to the strength of our shared need for shelter without disparaging our differences.
The walls of “crystal clear’s” tent-like structures were created with 8.5” x 8.5” squares printed on film transparencies and signed by members of the public in support of the concept that drives the work.
During Artist’s Hours in the Gallery a fourth structure was built as visitors continued to sign additional squares.
